Antescofo’s listening machine

July 31, 2012

Antescofo is a musical tool that allows interaction between machine and musicians. To achieve this, Antescofo uses sounds captured by microphones from an instrument or musician. Antescofo then “listens” and responds.
To listen to the musician, Antescofo uses the pure audio signal in real time. Antescofo can also use a MIDI source. Antescofo listen to the musician despite the complexity of his environment (polyphony, noise, errors of the musician, etc..). Antescofo captures the parameters that are important to “qualify” the interpretation. It performs like a reader recognizing the meaning of a sentence by looking at a text (the text contains symbols like MIDI program does), or like someone recognizing the meaning of a spoken sentence. Antescofo achieves this with a response time below the level perceptible to humans (less than 20 milliseconds).
After listening, just like a human being, Antescofo process what he could capture. Antescofo reacts to the result of its listening by taking actions. These actions are defined by the music composer, not through a music score, but through a computer program that can do everything a computer can.

PGD + genetic screening + IVF = designer baby

July 19, 2012

PGD has the potential to screen for genetic issues unrelated with medical necessity, such as intelligence and beauty, and against negative traits such as disabilities. The prospect of a ‘designer baby’ is closely related to PGD techniques, creating a fear that increasing frequency of genetic screening will move toward a modern eugenics movement. A ‘designer baby’ is a baby whose genetic makeup has been artificially selected by genetic engineering combined with in vitro fertilisation to ensure the presence or absence of particular genes or characteristics.
