to forget boring astronomy course about the gamma issue

Historically, the “point gamma” is the name of the moment when the sun passes over the equator during the spring equinox. Emile Lemoine (a Polytechnique postgraduate, 1861) is the first to have then devised a rite of making a parade in the courtyard of the Ecole Polytechnique (then located on the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève in Paris) in honor of the sun but also to forget boring astronomy course about the gamma issue. The first edition took place in 1862 and the gamma point was celebrated with great pomp in 1875. In 1880 the Minister of War prohibited the party under the pretext that it occasioned great expense and was a waste of time. The tradition was resumed in 1919 before being interrupted during World War II again. Restored in 1947, the gamma points continued to be celebrated even after the transfer to Palaiseau in 1976
