People nearing the end of a decade may make large purchase

people who were entering a new decade in their lives are more likely to question whether their lives were meaningful.

Among male users registered on a dating website that caters to people who are seeking extramarital affairs: men aged 29, 39, 49 and 59 were nearly 18% more likely than men at other ages to register on the site.

Suicide rates were 2.4% higher among individuals whose age  ended in a 9 than among people whose ages ended in any other digit.

runners ran about 2% faster at ages 29 and 39 than during the two years before and after those ages

Among first-time marathon runners: 25% more “9-enders” than runners whose ages ended in any other digit.

people who are nearing the end of a decade may be more likely to make large purchases (e.g., buy life insurance, invest in retirement savings, pursue cosmetic surgery, etc.)

 

=> People are more apt to evaluate their lives as a chronological decade ends, and, as a result, more likely to make life-altering decisions.

As we age, we’re more likely to make constructive rather than destructive choices

.wine and Donuts

ICANN decided to open a new area dedicated to the wine: .wine or .vin.

To get these digital territories and then be able to sell domain names under .vin (i.e. bordeaux.vin, champagne.vin, etc.), one  required to file an application to ICANN.

However, no French or European wines and spirits actor has filed a case.

Consequence: .wine and .vin domain management could be attributed to companies that have nothing to do with this sector.

Only one company candidated for the .vin domain: a US company specialized in domain names management, which, ironically, is called Donuts.

Curiously, we observe that the digital domain dedicated to wine, this precious drink, is managed by a company having the name of a typical American greasy and junk food.

But, even worse, no privileged access to the domain name would be guaranteed to AOC wine (for “controlled designation of origin”, a French certification) producers.

ICANN goes forward with its own logic (selling new extensions). Into this model, there is no soil, an area lies into a root server, a domain has a name, but no castle, no vineyards, no tanks. The risk, for the one who pays no attention to this model, is to be wiped off the map of the digital world.

A French journalist in San Francisco about Netflix (june 2014):


One of my first reflex, once I arrived on the spot and unpacked my suitcase and my computer, is to subscribe to Netflix.

A name, an email address, a credit card number (which will be charged $ 8 per month, the price of a pizza), and I plunge among the 48 million users of the online video service.

First surprise when I get connected: Netflix quickly insists on its recommendation system.

Pop-up windows display and make me scroll dozens of movies or series, offering me to indicate those I have seen and enjoyed.

“The more you write and watch our videos, the more we can help you find things that will please you,” Netflix promised me, endeavouring to  personalize its service.

These informations will be very useful to Netflix. They will allow the company to record and analyze precisely my uses, to examine what kind of movies or series I watch, how much time I spend each week, how many minutes I spent watching this episode of that series before stopping, to note, too, if I used the service from an iPhone app, a web browser or an Xbox, to compile the rating I have assigned to a video and the comments that I could leave.

This analysis of users activity allows Netflix to have a huge database: how millions of people watch movies and series for years, what kind of intrigue we are sensitive to, at what point our attention switches off, what are the types of characters of whom we prefer to follow the adventures, etc.

By studying these data, the site launched the fundind and the production of original series like House of Cards. But the movies catalog regularly reveals gaping holes.

The series selection is more complete than the movies one.

The service brings some frustration: no offer to watch the latest episodes of Girls or Game of Thrones, nor to find old Godard, Hitchcock, Lang, Resnais, Lynch, Antonioni, Herzog, Varda, Allen, Kubrick.

Among the majority of youung people met in San Francisco, each one found hints to fill the holes in the catalog, like exchanging downloaded files at work, or watching poor quality streaming, orgoing to the movie theatre!

the first as tragedy, the second as farce

According to Hegel all great events and historical figures are repeated to speak twice.

He forgot to add: the first as a tragedy, the second as a farce.

Caussidiere for Danton, Louis Blanc for Robespierre, The 1848-1851 Mountain for The 1793-1795 Mountain , the nephew for the uncle.

We see the same caricature in the circumstances where the second edition of 18 Brumaire happened.

Men make their own history, but they do not do it arbitrarily, under given conditions that have been transmitted from the past.

The tradition of all dead generations weighs very heavily on the brain of the living.

And even when they seem engaged in revolutionizing themselves and the things around them, in creating something entirely new, it is precisely in these times of revolutionary crisis that they timidly conjure the spirits of the past, that they borrow their names, slogans and costumes, to appear on the new stage of history in this respectable disguise and borrowed language.
